Design licences
The two licences a Marketplace design is published under, written for boards: both let you build and sell boards from the design, neither lets you reshare or resell the design itself.
On this page 4 sections
Every design in the Surfbase Marketplace is published under one of two licences, chosen by its publisher. Surfbase's own designs use Open shape. They are written for surfboards, not for files: the point of a design is to build boards from it, so both licences allow that, in any number, for sale or not. What they protect is the design itself, which may not be passed on or sold on.
The licence is shown on every listing page and in the Use this design sheet before you copy a design.
Open shape
Anyone may use this design, modify it, and build and sell boards made from it, in any number. Credit to the shaper is appreciated but not required. The design file itself may not be resold, republished or offered for download, in the Marketplace or anywhere else, as it is or modified. It is provided as drawn, without warranty.
Open shape is the default for free listings.
Shop licence
The team that used this design may use it, modify it, and build and sell boards made from it, in any number. The design may not be shared with another team, republished, resold or offered for download, as it is or modified. It is provided as drawn, without warranty.
The Shop licence is what a paid design uses, when paid designs open in the Marketplace.
What both allow
- Using the copy in your own Surfbase as the start of a board, changing anything about it.
- Building boards from it, by hand or on a machine, and selling them.
- Keeping the copy after the publisher updates or removes their design.
What neither allows
- Publishing the design, or a modified version of it, in the Marketplace or anywhere else as your own.
- Sending the design file to another team, or selling it.
- Offering it for download.
If a design in the Marketplace is yours and was published by someone else, use Report on its page. Reported designs are hidden while Surfbase reviews them.
