Suggested volume for a rider

Surfbase turns a rider's weight and ability into a volume range in litres, nudged by their fitness and the waves they ride.

How it works

Suggested volume is weight × a factor for the rider's ability. It's a starting point for a conversation, not a spec.

  • Beginner: 0.60 to 0.70
  • Beginner+: 0.50 to 0.58
  • Intermediate: 0.44 to 0.50
  • Advanced: 0.38 to 0.43
  • Pro: 0.34 to 0.38

A 75 kg intermediate surfer gets 33 to 38 L.

What nudges the range

  • Fitness: less fit riders get more float, up to 6% more. Fitter riders get up to 4% less.
  • Wave size: knee and waist-high waves add volume, overhead and double take a little off, and Big adds it back for big-wave boards.
  • Wave power: weak waves add 3%, strong waves take 3% off.

All the nudges together never move the range more than 10% either way. Surfs, Gender, Break and Style are saved on the profile but don't change the number.

See it for a customer

  1. Open the customer

Go to Customers and open their page.

  2. Add what's missing

Suggested volume needs a Weight and an Ability. Select Edit customer to add them. The range updates live as you answer.

  3. Compare it to their board

The bar shows where their most recent ordered board sits: inside, above or below the range.
